Summary/Abstract: This article examines how China’s imperial past influences its current foreign policy in the South China Sea. Considering the socio-cultural landmarks of Chinese civilization, we find that the Chinese state has built a sphere of regional influence since two millennia ago, which was later lost to Western powers. However, China’s economic and military re-emergence in recent decades has allowed it to reconsider the possibility of establishing a new regional hegemony. The hypothesis is all the more plausible as much of Chinese society is pressuring the Chinese Communist Party to take a firm stand on the issue of territorial claims in the South China Sea. Currently, China’s biggest dilemma is the American presence, which is trying to remove from the Asian landscape so as not to interfere with its national interest and strategic goals
