Summary/Abstract: Starting from the finding that school and teachers have occupied and still occupy a central place in the life of a community, both through the role played in the formation of young generations and through the effort to preserve and maintain the elements that outline a local identity, our approach aims at writing a brief history of the school units that have operated and are still operating in the city of Sebeş. Respecting the chronological criteria, our presentation begins with the so-called „Latin school” (attested in the fourteenth century) and continues with the German school (established as a seminary school, raised in the nineteenth century to the rank of gymnasium), with the Hungarian state primary school, with the Romanian confessional school, with the state civil school (through which the foundations of the Romanian secondary education in Sebeş were laid), with the mixed state gymnasium and the local high school. We consider the presentation of the historical evolution of these school units, the identification of teachers and principals who worked in them, as well as the presentation of the school figures (where documentary sources have allowed us to do so).
