Summary/Abstract: Virgil Ghiurcă was born on September 9, 1927 at Colţirea, Maramureş. He began his studies in Careii Mari (Satu Mare). After the Vienna Diktat (1940) he continued his sec ondary education at Lugoj. In 1947 Virgil Ghiurcă is registered as student of the Faculty of Law, but due to financial difficul ties, decided to leave the University, in order to find a job; he worked as an accountant at the state owned farm from Sărăsău, Maramureş County. Virgil Ghiurcă registered as a student at the Faculty of Geology Geography of the „Babeş Bolyai” University. After graduation, on September 1st 1954, he started to work as Head of Laboratory within the Chair of Paleontology. In 1957, he was promoted assistant to the Faculty of Geography. In 1967 he becomes a lecturer, and in 1970 obtained his PhD in Geology. In addition to his outstanding qualities as a teacher and researcher in the field of paleontology Dr. Ghiurcă noted promoter of disci pline almost unknown in Romania: Gemology. Besides numerous works of paleontology, fossils dedicated especially briozoa, Prof. Ghiurca has more than 100 papers of Gemology. In 1991 he is the founder of A.M.P.G.A.R. (i.e. Association of Amateur Mineralogists, Paleontologists and Gemologists in Romania). After retirement continued to be active as a teacher consultant. Prof. Ghiurca Virgil passed away in 2008 at the age of 81 years.
