Summary/Abstract: Plastic arts had no deep roots in Timişoara before the 20th century. During the 1960s a new generation of experimental artists began their career in Timişoara. In 1970, the Sigma Group of artists was founded by István Bertalan, Constantin Flondor, Doru Tulcan, Elisei Rusu, Ion Gaita, Lucian Codreanu. The group was largely influenced by the ideas of the Bauhaus and constructivism, but also cybernetic art, and Timişoara became in important centre of design and applied arts in Romania. The article presents the collective and individual efforts of the group members.
