Summary/Abstract: The article deals with some linguistic (lexical and grammatical) peculiarities of the Torment of Jonah, Varachisii and others in the March volume of metropolitan Macarius’ Great Menaion Reader (copy for the Cathedral of the Dormition, 29 of March). The analysis shows that the language is archaic, bearing the marks of an ancient translation. Its vocabulary reflects the Old Bulgarian lexical fund but also offers new words, special uses, new meanings and Greek parallels. Its grammatical structure has retained a number of features of the Old Bulgarian literary language. Among the innovations stands out the use of тои as a third-person pronoun.
