Summary/Abstract: The text highlights the facets and implications concerning the crisis about the demarcation of “exclusive economic zones” in the Eastern Mediterranean. This controversy has been simmering for many years. Turkey provoked an escalation this summer by sending the research ship Oruç Reis escorted by war ships to search for energy resources in an area that Greece argues belongs to its exclusive economic zone. The analysis seeks to show that the titles claimed by all sides within the complicated net of exclusive economic zones in the Eastern Mediterranean will lead to further foreign policy alliances and block formation. The governments involved are prone to exploit the developments for their own domestic advantages. The author examines if and how a mutual conflict solution could be managed.
