Summary/Abstract: What determines the extent to which a country in the former communist world undertakes and sustains economic reforms ? This paper, which offers an answer to this question, is organized in two major sections. The first section presents and tests several hypothesized determinants of economic reform. First, the dependent variable-the extent of economic reform in post-communist countries as of the end of 1995- is specified, and countries are ranked. Then a number of alternative causes of cross-national variation on the dependent variable, including economic, cultural, political-institutional, and political-junctural explanations, are put forward.
