Summary/Abstract: As we come closer to the tenth anniversary of the 1989 upheaval in Eastern Europe, we need to reassess the meanings of those truly world-historical events. Initially acclaimed as a triumph of civil society and a victory of the powerless, the revolutions (or whatever those changes were) have lately become subject to all sorts of revisionism. Faced with the rise of ugly forms of nationalist populism, even former dissidents have uttered strong criticism of the universalist and liberal expectations of that heroic period. [...]
