Summary/Abstract: In the countries of what used to be the Soviet world system, rapid, unforeseen, and far-reaching changes took place in 1989-1990. Within a very short time the constitutional order was transformed. In a few months, the political institutions of parliamentary government were born. The rule of law took shape. Private property was emancipated and the legal framework of a capitalist economy was laid down. There has not been a single great revolution that has generated, within the same time interval, more momentous changes in the structure of the economy and society. [...]
