Summary/Abstract: The research is focused on the rituals with masks, which are a still living tradition in Macedonia. The paper deals with a comparative analysis of the traditional and contemporary aspects of the existing form of the Mechkari rituals procession with masks. The way these rituals are performed in contemporary conditions gives them new meanings and functions, so nowadays the role of entertainment dominates over the one of a magic ritual; and next to, or instead of, the traditional characters, appear ones representing a commentary of the year past. Today the participants in these events are often not aware of the former ritual function of their actions. This is why the need for their further research and nurturing as an intangible cultural heritage of Macedonia appears.
