Summary/Abstract: The pluperfect is generally defined as a tense denoting an event which is prior with respect to a past reference moment. The paper aims at analysing the forms and the functions of the pluperfect in the modern languages of the Balkan linguistic area (Bulgarian, Greek, Albanian, and Romanian), discussing its morphological markers on a formal aspect, and the contexts of its temporal and modal readings on the functional aspect.
