Summary/Abstract: Since making headlines in the late 1980s as three sisterlike republics struggling for freedom from the Soviet Union, the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have diverged significantly in their post-independence political, economic, and social development. This article traces the three countries' political development by comparing their political parties and party systems. It analyzes how these parties evolved against the background of their shared communist legacies and highlights similarities and differences between the three states as well as other post-communist countries.
