Summary/Abstract: In the country where I live, a chill runs down many people's spines when they hear the expression national identity. I can be counted among them. This concept, within the vocabulary of public life in Hungary, is the expression that, during the past several years, has made possible the most successful careers. Sonorous expressions that resonated in the paper lace, in the service of any politics. A seductive bond of words: one believed one was freely expressing one's meaning, without even realizing how unfree one was. One is entrapped by old stereotypes, entrapped by the wave of nationalist preconceptions, as all of Europe characterizes them.
