Summary/Abstract: The creation of so-called democratic rule-of-law regimes on the ruins of state socialism has been interpreted by the disoriented and scared Old Left in Eastern Europe as a return to a pre-modern past-and hailed as such by the unreconstructed Old Right east of the Rhine. Curiously enough, this was uncritically echoed at the time in the West: one remembers the media cliches of the period about the alleged re-establishment of historical continuity, the reawakening of that nebulous entity, "the past," and the onset of "normalcy."
