Summary/Abstract: In June 1998-the year of Adam Mickiewicz's bicentennial-in the little Belorussian village of Szczorsy, near Nowogrodek, lightning destroyed a venerated oak tree. The tree was several hundred years old, and it is believed that in 1822 Adam Mickiewicz wrote his historical poem Grażyna in its shade. When the lightning struck, the tree was already dead-hollow and destined to be felled. The lightning delivered a more fitting final stroke. [...]
