Summary/Abstract: In June 1998-the year of Adam Mickiewicz's bicentennial-in the little Belorussian village of Szczorsy, near Nowogrodek, lightning destroyed a venerated oak tree. The tree was several hundred years old, and it is believed that in 1822 Adam Mickiewicz wrote his historical poem Grażyna in its shade.
