Summary/Abstract: Probably no other bilateral dialogue in Europe has been so clearly dependent upon developments within the broader international arena as Polish-German relations. Just over a decade ago Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) disagreed on most issues that really mattered in their respective foreign policies. Today, with the end of the Cold War, both countries have worked to integrate Poland into the West, mainly through securing Warsaw's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU). This policy has already borne fruit; partially due to German support, Poland has recently joined NATO. Also, and more important here, it was largely thanks to Bonn's constant advocacy that the first phase of EU enlargement has begun and that Poland has found itself on track to become an EU member before the end of the next decade.
