Summary/Abstract: In the literature on postcommunist transformation, the modernization of communist labor relations is frequently referred to as a precondition for the sustainable economic and political restructuring of Central Eastern Europe. From a labor economics perspective communist labor relations contributed greatly to the failure of communist economies and, thus, their transformation into a pluralistic, capitalist model of labor relations is seen as a prime requirement for a successful economic restructuring.
