Summary/Abstract: The author of the article assumes that apart from the progress of research on Grin’s works are still many problems that had not yet been investigated. Among other things the evolution of the hero is worth paying attention to as well as of the world at large, particularly in the final period of the writing of this extremely popular writer. In the article there is discussed the artistic originality of Grin’s story Thief in the Wood which was first written in 1929. The specificity of narration, composition, organiza tion of space and time, the technique of presentation of heroes and descriptions leaves no doubt related to the clearly distinguishable complexity of the artistic world. This complexity found its expression in the pessimistic, fatalistic destiny of the main hero. Similar solutions may be found in the successive works of the writer such as: Jessy and Chorgiana, The Boad to Nowhere, The Untouchable and the other. We may find other solutions in such works as Green Lamp, Watercolour, and The Captain of the Port, and other. The explication of these contradictions of the writer require more detailed and more complex analysis of his output.
