Summary/Abstract: The novel is discussed as a genre established in disclosing the truth as identity structure. As a genre stemming from the early human self-understanding as animal rationale, from man’s new attitude to the world, his rudimentary familiarity with reality and the initial idea of an individual will to action, the novel is a genre of emerging self-awareness as well as of skeptical attitude. As a privileged form of ignorance (Bakhtin), it can easily approach the most perplexing and subtle problems of self and identity, of freedom and necessity, of deceiving (false) subjectivity of man as subjectum, etc., and so as a genre it considers the issues concerning our most basic human existence. In fact, it is involved in the issues of being as becoming. Claimed as a form of a substantial irony of existence (Kundera 1986), the novel – a form open to the concreteness of the world in its very presence – is approached as an art form, that manifests the interests into the inconclusive reality of life.
