Summary/Abstract: Most commentators who have attempted to make structured projections about the newly emerging parties in postcommunist Eastern Europe have argued that they are likely to develop as centralized bodies in which elite leadership groups play a predominant role; with loose electoral constituencies, a low membership base, relatively weak local organizational structures and social implantation; and with a strong emphasis on links with the state, particularly compared with parties in western democracies at a similar stage of party development.
