Summary/Abstract: The fable’s ”hermeneutic translation” (Schaeffer) and narrative schemes are echoed in various prose poems of the modernist period. Examples taken from different authors (Max Jacob, the surrealists, Mac Orlan, etc.) integrate a savoir calqued on the fable’s discursive practice. In surrealist texts, the gnomic code shifts the balance in the traditional relationship between the fable and the reader. The avant-garde hermeneutic translation tends to expand literariness and often claims legitimacy.
