Days and nights in a mental institution

Everyday life at the provincial institution for the mentally ill in Darłowo (1841–1900) in the light of the institution’s regulations and staff instructions

Summary/Abstract: The article shows the model of everyday life the residents of the provincial mental institution in Darłowo (Rügenwalde) created in institution’s regulations, as well as staff instructions. Analysis of the content of these documents indicates that the intention of their authors was to create an efficient institution, which was initially to be a place of isolation, and in later years also to treat mentally ill people. The content of the institution’s regulations and instructions indicate that their authors, when working on these documents, were guided by humanitarian demands, paying great attention to the good andsafety of the patient.
