Summary/Abstract: The Social section looks at the social effects that the recent adoption of the State Budget has stirred. While the trade unions are unhappy with the Government’s perceived failure to transform some of its electoral promises into policies, their potential for destructive action is lowering, given that the union leaders perceive more benefits from cooperating with the Government than from confronting it. A special focus is given to the situation in the Jiu Valley, where extreme poverty has become a serious threat to social stability, and where active measures for employment generation have had only disappointing results so far.
