Collaborationism in the Communist Concentrationary Universe. The Activity of Victor Biris within the Aiud Re-Education (1959-1964)

Summary/Abstract: The discussion about the political prisoners’ collaboration with the Securitate is one of the “sensitive” issues of the Romanian Gulag, one that created tensions especially noticeable in detention literature. The present paper proposes to investigate this theme in the context of the Aiud re-education (1959-1964), a process of ideological and human restructuring enacted by the Securitate, which targeted the legionary political prisoners. Benefitting from a consistent production of documents, the result of the activity of the Aiud Operative Group (the Securitate unit in the penitentiary that led the re-education), the article will explore, in the first part, the informative work and the typologies of collaborationism, focusing in the second part on the activity of Victor Biriș, the most important agent of the Operative Group among the prisoners. The operative missions entrusted to him by the Securitate and how they were put into practice represent, in fact, the fundamental key to understanding the re-education process and, implicitly, its success.
