Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses an ambivalent category of deceased: women died in childbirth. There was a particular consideration on women dying during childbirth in folklore. It was believed that they are not able to find calm after death, because they are still connected with their living child. What is more troubling, their death was concerned as unclear. This is the reason of calling them ghosts or phantoms. The attitude towards this phenomena among early modern society is revealed by analysing ethnographical sources, archaeological excavations, as well as funeral liturgy.
