Summary/Abstract: It is well known that a word in a literary language is conditioned by the system of universal speech, but when a word appears in the separate system of a literary context, it is influenced by this system, in particular, its semantic value is affected. The article examines the semantic evolution of the word ‘чистый’, which in Maxim Gorky’s novel ‘The Three’ is conditioned by the personality of the principal character and by the development of the plot.
