Summary/Abstract: The decision in the spring of 2007 to have Ukraine and Poland host Euro 2012 was received by Ukrainians with great pleasure. They hoped that the event would contribute to a thorough modernization of the post-Soviet state and confirm their European aspirations, awakened during the Orange Revolution in 2004. Although Ukrainians were able to prepare the necessary infrastructure, the effects of the global economic crisis in 2008 led to political conflict in the “Orange” camp between President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, allowing the rival camp of Viktor Yanukovich, who won the presidential election in 2010, to take political control. In 2001, Yulia Tymoshenko was sent to prison, resulting in a wave of international criticism and putting into question Ukraine’s participation in Euro 2012.
