Summary/Abstract: The author indicates the direct relationship between W. M. Garshin’s short story and the atmosphere and political fight in Russia on the turn of the 70s and 80s of the nineteenth century. The author, however, does not consider the work as a political treatise. He envisages it as a particular artistic model of a typical situation in a given period in Russia. To do this the author not only analyzes the contents of the story but also the materials related to the literary and political polemic that flared up since the time of the publication of this work of great diversity of meaning. Images, motifs and moods shown in this story have been closely connected in the minds of Garshin’s contemporaries with the revolutionary struggle of the members of Narodnaia Wola with tsarism. The opinion has not, however, been unanimous but oftentimes dependent on the actual political situation. The author of the article specifies also the central idea of the story, which is a synthetic expression of the actual political strife, contained in the romantic and allegorical form. The work presents the element of hopelessness but first of all the moral and ethical justification of the struggle for freedom.
