Summary/Abstract: The article throws light on the ways the phoneme ‘I’ is adapted into the Russian language. This problem arises in loans of foreign words. It is known that the phoneme ‘I’ which has its place in the systems of west European languages is foreign to the phonological system of the Russian language. This sound foreign to the Russian language is replaced by native sounds. Depending on the phonetic context it is replaced by palatal ‘I’ or hard ‘I’. It seems that it is also influenced by the degree of adaptation of the loan word; in words not fully adapted the phoneme ‘I’ preceding given vowels or consonants is replaced by palatal ‘I’, and in words of a larger degree of adaptation by dark ‘I’, and so on.
