Summary/Abstract: The difference between the word stress and the secondary stress consists in the fact that the word stress is used to differ the lexical, grammatical and stylistic meanings and in this way it can fulfil both the distinctive (phonemic) and the grammatical (morphosyntactical) functions. The secondary stress is merely a phonetic phenomenon; in the phonemic, grammatical and stylistic levels it denotes the lack of stress. Unlike the word stress the secondary stress can be foreseen if we only know the place of the word stress. In the field of the word stresses there appears both the opposition and the neutralization, which phenomena do not exist among the secondary stresses. An opposition exists, however, between the word stress and secondary stress since a word stress can be changed into a secondary stress. As a matter of fact only the word stress can be the logical stress in a sentence. The word stress together with the apophony is a kind of submorpheme or accessory morpheme, where as the secondary stress may be considered as a submorphophoneme or an accessory morphophoneme.
