JULIAN TUWIM’S TRANSLATIONS KONSTANTY BALMONT’S POETRY

Summary/Abstract: Balmont’s poetry never reached great popularity in Poland. It aroused some interest in the twenties. Julian Tuwim had one of the leading positions among the translators of Balmont’s poetry at that time. He translated some thirty poems of the Russian poet. The selection did not result from an ideological or artistic choice, but is rather random. Yet it gives a crosssection, though not very consistent, of the whole of Balmont’s output. An analysis of the translations proves that Tuwim took great pains and was on the whole successful in imitating the features of versification of the poems. He also attempts, though with less success, to retain the wealth of sounds in Balmont’s poetry. The most serious deviation from the original is observed in the style. The translations were made at the beginning of Tuwim’s career as a poet. A marked influence of the poetics of “Young Poland” and lack of experience of the young translator are obvious. In later years Julian Tuwim himself criticized severely these attempts at assimilating Balmont’s poems into the Polish poetry.
