Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the article. The article is devoted to identifying the methodological principles of design nature and functions substantiation in Ukrainian (Marxist aesthetic thought) and Western European (analytical and pragmatic approaches) research, allows us to formulate a new research field of the design phenomenon in the framework of cultural studies. The methodology is based on the application of theoretical-analytical, historical-logical, comparative and hermeneutical methods. The specified methodological approach allows us to trace and analyze common and different in the study justification of design practices modification that have developed in the territory of Ukrainian and Western European cultures. The scientific novelty of the work consists in identifying common and different in theoretical and methodological substantiation of design in Ukrainian studies of XX and beginning of XXI century, as well as Anglo-Saxon (analytical) traditions, which qualitatively determined different vectors and modifications of design practices and allowed them to be used to justify the design phenomenon as a general cultural one. Conclusions. The subject of Soviet-Ukrainian research of the XX century are primarily the practice of artistic design and industrial design in the context of new cultural requirements for the production humanization. In contemporary Ukrainian discourse, design practices are thought of as having the goal of transforming and aestheticizing the cultural environment as a whole. The Anglo-Saxon tradition identifies two basic positions regarding the concept of “design”: “Renaissance” and “capitalist”. Emphasis on the priority of the study of process design leads to the need to analyze the totality of the “cultural dimensions” of design, which is based on its understanding of how complex and dynamic systems of processes, products and institutions are involving the cultural and social context.
