Summary/Abstract: The significant influence of English in professional domains during the last decades has led to the appearance of various English elements in the Serbian lan- guage. Very often the use of these elements varies in different contexts, and there are numerous queries related to the standardization issues in that field. Foreign elements in the compounds and semi-compounds in the Serbian sports register represent the focus of the present paper. The aim was to consider in which forms all thоse various elements appear and to point out the principles of standardization that should be applied when they are used. The analysis is placed in the context of lexical morphol- ogy. The corpus consisted of dictionaries, a sports encyclopedia in Serbian, sources from the Internet and from daily press. The analysis showed that the application of existing spelling rules may be quite a challenging task in the given sports corpus. The spelling of compounds and semi-compounds with English elements in Serbian largely depends on the meanings that the English elements have, the semantic links between them in the Serbian language, and the degree of independence of the given word components. If the speakers of Serbian are not familiar enough with sports terminology or lack the knowledge of English, these elements may be quite difficult to define and consequently the spelling rules will not be appropriately applied. The examples from the sports register that have been presented in this paper show that it is necessary to define more specific spelling rules regarding the proper use of English elements in compounds and semi-compounds in the Serbian sports register.
