EUROPEAN ENERGY SECURITY, GAS SUPPLY AND DEMAND: SUPPLIERS FROM CASPIAN REGION COUNTRIES

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the rising demand for the gas in Europe especially in last decades. Comparably low indigenous gas resources within Europe face the increased consumption so the import of energy source as gas is going to rise in the future. The rising demand of Europe on gas makes it vulnerable against this dependency on monopolist suppliers and put the shade on the energy security of the Europe. The Gasprom`s disagreement with Ukraine and supply cutting from Russian side, which became an international gas crisis in January 2006 and also more recently in January 2009 can be example of it. EU should implement common policy or action plan in energy sector and try to secure the gas import from different supplier countries. The Caspian region with reach energy resources could be good addition to the prospect EU suppliers countries and especially Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are considered from the geopolitical point of view as reliable actors in gas supply system which could cover the Europe’s gas demand in the future. The further criteria as infrastructure capacity, costs and pipeline routes of gas should be taken to the consideration as well.
