WORD-FORMATIVE CONTAMINATION IN THE NEW RUSSIAN LEXICON

Summary/Abstract: The article contains the characterization and ample illustration of the models of word-formative contamination in the new Russian lexicon. Two of the most productive models are: so-called telescoping (e.g. бутилен < бутан + этилен) and the agglutination of initial word segments (e.g. кермет < керамика + металл). The author argues that the activation of the processes of word-formative contamination in modern Russian, especially telescoping, may be attributed to the influence from English (cf. stagflation < stagnation + inflation; haylage < hay + silage).
