Summary/Abstract: This paper examines issues of intermediality in art, specifically those between literature and music. Theoretical insights provide evidence of three variants of relevant relations: literature and music; literature within music; music within literature. Cases of literature hosting the music usually point to more abstract worlds of meaning, fulfilled on the fictional plane which does not reflect onto the code. Special attention is given to cases of music within literature, and these are viewed through the prism of metaphor acting as a sign of the manneristic spirit of yearning (desire) and its movement towards irregularity. Breakthrough of music into literature, in monomedial form, comes to attention especially because of the le velling of language and (writer’s) creativity. The theoretical level of this discussion points to a historical array of examples of works of European and Croatian authors.
