Summary/Abstract: The author draws attention to the fact that modern Russian newspapers use a number of non-standard lexical items including slang, low colloquialisms, vulgar words and Russian“mat”. The causes for that are not only social, as it is usually considered, but also linguistic. First, the language of mass communication is pragmatically determined and second, non-standard vocabulary is itself onthologically expressive, dialog orientated and potentially pragmatically determined.
