DEFINITION OF THE TERM “SOUL” IN DICTIONARIES OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Summary/Abstract: In the article the problems of definition of the term “soul” in 37 dictionaries are investigated, their meanings are considered, the comparative analysis is made. The relevance of the work is due to the need for a comprehensive study of the “soul” token in the language, which will allow us to trace the dynamics of the semantic development of this lexical unit in the dictionaries of the Ukrainian language. The main research methods are descriptive, comparative and statistical. Scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time an analysis of the definitions of the term “soul” is carried out according to the dictionaries of the Ukrainian language. The results of the research indicate that discussions among the industry experts and linguists are ongoing regarding the content of the term “soul”. First of all, the importance of this lexical unit in the interpretative dictionaries of the Ukrainian language is analyzed in particular in the “Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language” in 11 volumes, “The Great Interpretive Dictionary of Modern Ukrainian Language”, “The Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language” in 20 volumes. The interpretative term “soul” is also considered in the industry dictionaries, for example: P.E. Gerchanivska “Culturology: A Glossary”, S.U. Goncharenko “Ukrainian Pedagogical Dictionary”, Encyclopedic Dictionary of Symbols of Culture of Ukraine, “Psychological Dictionary” edited by N.A. Pobirchenko, “Religious Dictionary” edited by A. Kolodny and B. Lobovik, O.P. Sidorenko “Dictionary of Religious Terms”, “Sociological and Pedagogical Dictionary” edited by V.V. Radula et al. Among the 37 dictionaries studied, we trace 23 fixations of the term “soul”.
