Summary/Abstract: In my paper the opportunities for competence development with teaching literature are presented, based on the teaching of Hungarian German literature. As the first step, certain theories are outlined, viewing literature as a means of identity construction; summarizing this function of literature on a semiotic basis. Then I try to illustrate some opportunities for development through specific techniques, highlighting basic identity competences: the ability of analyzing the meaning constructs in a complex and critical way, furthermore the ability to identify and reflect on different perspectives are discussed. I also deal with the competence of integrating personal experience into conceptual, scientific frameworks or systems, the application of different ways of thinking and the ability of restructuring and reorganizing these systems.
