Summary/Abstract: Constantin Udroiu (born in Bucharest, 1930 - Rome, 2014) was a plastic artist who knew, in his youth, Romanian communist prisons. The present study follows his artistic biography, with a special emphasis on the experience of exile (established in 1971 in Italy, where he lived and created, until death) and his creations with religious themes. The painter’s interest in the canons of Byzantine religious art, his successes in illustrating (with many works appreciated in the Western world, Catholic) or teaching them to his students (as professor of the Modern Art Academy) are linked to the years of prison - and with the opening to spirituality that such knowledge of Evil can bring.
