Summary/Abstract: Theatre has always been at the forefront of Romanian Jewish cultural life, but during World War II it became a genuine means of cultural resistance and political defiance. Its importance for the life of the Romanian Jewish community in times of turmoil goes without saying. It is, however, a new understanding of its relevance for, and contribution to, the majority Romanian culture that transpires from an in depth analysis of the Barascheum phenomenon, and which needs to be further assessed. Obviously, opening and maintaining a Jewish theatre in a war torn far right led country was an act of despair, but also of courage, which eventually paid off, as many were able to survive this way.
