Summary/Abstract: On April 28, 2019, Karol Modzelewski died in a Warsaw hospital. I could have written “Professor Modzelewski,” but for me and many Polish and European students, academics, labor unionists, and politicians he was a leader, teacher, and friend. He thought about himself as a historian and had written several distinguished works about medieval European history. But his life and deeds have a historical dimension of their own. He has been, as Hannah Arendt would say, an actor and sufferer in the major movements and catastrophic events of the last eighty years. [...]
