Summary/Abstract: The paper presents eight models of the development of multifunctional rural areas in the region of Lower Silesia. The factors adopted to serve as the basis for the models’ construction were the dynamics and the level of urbanisation of these rural areas as well as their multifunctional character. The results of the conducted research permitted to distinguish 68 communes meeting the criterion of multi-functionality which were, next, attributed to the individual development models. The eight available models were adapted to suit the different conditions in which the given communes had to function. The worked-out proposals are based on the assumption that it is necessary to create (in accordance with local possibilities) development conditions conducive to raising the level of development and the quality of life in peripheral areas in order to limit their marginalization. The constructed models focus, as a result, on the endogenous factors of development and try to use the potential possessed by these areas. The multifunctional development of rural areas requires active support on the part of self-governments both at the regional and local level. Local governments should, in particular, create conditions for the development of entrepreneurship (e.g. through institutions of the business environment) and invest in broadly understood infrastructure, social infrastructure included.
