Summary/Abstract: The decline of students number in Poland affects, on the one hand, the whole higher education system and the situation of individual higher education institutions, but on the other hand, generates a number of economic consequences for academic cities. The study, based on GUS statistical data, presents changes in the number of students in the voivodeships capitals in the period 2006–2015. In the paper attempts were made to determine the economic nature of the consequences resulting from the loss of the number of students in Polish academic cities.
