Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the role and educational function of the contemporary family, viewed in the context of current general-social, civilizational and cultural-educational development. In modern conditions, it is established as the basic biosocial community and an indispensable factor in the process of education, development and formation of human personality. Today, the family is facing increasing scientific and technological and civilizational development, which enabled and conditioned the planetary connection of the world, with uncertain outcomes for the foreseeable future. Influenced by the increasingly rapid and radical transformation and turbulent reorganization of society, it is losing its traditional characteristics, facing the legitimate necessity of fostering new conditions, styles and ways of functioning, that is, of educational activity. Our analysis, among other things, unambiguously confirms the thesis that, in the new civilization environment, families, in addition to numerous socially-verified and pedagogically competent institutions, are the most responsible community for proper and successful upbringing, education, development and formation of their offspring. Depending on the objectively given socio-economic and general-civilizational context, in practice social needs and development goals use appropriate styles, means and models of family educational influence. In other words, in parallel with the transformation, modernization, democracy and humanization of society, family and all other institutional educational strategies are changing and adapting. This actually means that the most current trends and visions of social development can be fully understood and permanently supported in practice only by well-educated and competent parents, ready and able to accept or follow the philosophy of lifelong learning. Therefore, this paper aims to observe, analyze and elaborate the regularities of lifelong education and learning as necessary preconditions for the continuous acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen family educational competences.
