Summary/Abstract: Basis: Work in health care generally causes higher levels of stress than any other profession. Excessive amounts of stress increases the risk of misconduct and wrong decisions, accidents at the workplace as well as psychosomatic diseases. The aim of the pilot study was to determine the impact of a 10-week yoga course on the nurses’ mental health. Study sample: At the beginning of the yoga course the group consisted of 31 nurses (average age 36.9 ± 7.0 years; average nurse practice 15.8 ± 8.0 years) and after the completion of the yoga course it consisted of 25 nurses (average age 38, 0 ± 7.0 years; average nurse practice 17.2 ± 7.6 years). Methods: In a pilot study, we used a standardized anxiety and stress questionnaire (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Questionnaire). The questionnaires were collected before the 10-week yoga course started (January 2016) and after it finished (April 2016). Results: Significantly highest percentage difference (positive effect) before and after the intervention was found in the statement “I often feel like crying” (percentage difference - 55.3%; 3.13 vs. 1.40). The yoga course also had a significant positive impact on nervousness, feeling of being rested, feeling of restlessness and tiredness. Conclusion: We recommend executives and managers to support in nurses their active attitude to their health by offering them, as part of their benefits, a possibility to do physical activities among which accredited yoga classes can be offered as well.
