Summary/Abstract: I begin with a preamble, in an effort to create a responsive set for what is to follow. The beginning of this preamble has been given to me by a friend (who, unlike me, also is a professional philosopher). What she writes is by way of a spontaneous response to the following pages. »On the first reading«, she writes, »the paper seemed like a lot to say little. On the second reading, a very different view. I felt it had to sit. At first I thought an introductory first paragraph might be in order: that the following attempts to show temporally, in its temporal spread, the growth of an idea, the cunning of reason; that certain difficulties of comprehension may arise therefrom.
