Polish Efforts to Obtain the Release of Wiktor Alter and Henryk Erlich

Summary/Abstract: The article goes back to the shocking history of two cases of imprisonment, conviction and death of Henryk Erlich and Wiktor Alter, two key Bund figures, in the Soviet Union. The story, based on unpublished and published archive materials and on a wealth of earlier publications, focuses on the efforts of the Polish government to obtain the release of the two prisoners. The author seeks to trace back in chronological order the steps taken by Poland and present the determinants which the Polish authorities had to take into account when planning their moves.
