Summary/Abstract: Home education (HE) is not regulated in Turkey; it is a relatively new concept, gaining popularity in recent years among parents who are not satisfied with the national education system. The evolution of the Turkish educational system and critiques of this system are evaluated. Parental beliefs are discussed along with the critiques of education in schools and the history of education out of school. The history of education out of school in Turkey is evaluated and examples of education out of school during the late Ottoman Empire and the early Republic of Turkey era, which have an influence on the current situation, are cited. Parental beliefs and cultural choices are explored, along with the problems that home educators encounter. The reasons why some parents opt out of the school system in Turkey and seek alternative methods to the traditional schooling is highlighted. Lastly, the legality of education out of school in Turkey, is covered.
