Summary/Abstract: Purpose This article aims to present the issues of corporate mission statement and the related problem of leadership. Methodology For this purpose, the literature on the subject, both international and national, was studied. An analysis of the literature showed that companies tend to put more effort in the formulation of their mission, rather than in the diffusion of its message or gaining support for it among employees. The article also presents the results of surveys and a discussion panel, which confirmed the validity of the hypothesis about companies’ exaggerated focus on the process of mission formulation. Findings The article confirms the necessity of formulating the mission of an enterprise in a clear way and one that is supported by all employees. The fact that this was a pilot study could be regarded as a limitation. However, the article has revealing a character, because in Poland there is a significant lack of research on the corporate mission statement. Originality This article also notes the important role of leadership in the formulation of the corporate mission and the need for more in-depth empirical analyses of the resulting high expectations regarding leaders that are embedded in society
